{"id":453,"date":"2013-08-12T16:44:24","date_gmt":"2013-08-12T11:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smritiweb.com\/navin\/?p=453"},"modified":"2013-08-13T15:56:50","modified_gmt":"2013-08-13T10:26:50","slug":"how-to-choose-a-name-for-your-startupwebsite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smritiweb.com\/navin\/blogging\/how-to-choose-a-name-for-your-startupwebsite","title":{"rendered":"How to choose a name for your startup\/website?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I routinely get asked advice on good names for websites and\/or startups, and after having seen a bunch of good and bad names, and many websites\/startups having to spend time and money to change their name after a few years, here is my suggested algorithm:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name should be short (e.g. NOT <a href=\"http:\/\/WithoutGivingTheMovieAway.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">WithoutGivingTheMovieAway<wbr \/>.com<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>It should be easy to pronounce, and should not be prone to misspellings (e.g. NOT <a href=\"http:\/\/pluggd.in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-tooltip=\"attached\">pluggd.in<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>You <i>must<\/i> own the .com domain name (e.g. NOT <a href=\"http:\/\/shopsocial.ly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ShopSocial.ly<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t pick a name that is too foreign-sounding for English audiences (<em>e.g.<\/em> NOT <a href=\"http:\/\/viralmint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-tooltip=\"attached\">dealtadka.com<\/a>) &#8211; ignore this rule only if you are sure that your audience is limited to your home country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Note: all of the above examples are real websites started by real people who did not heed this advice and then a few years later had to go through a costly and confusing name change process. Click on the website to find out what they&#8217;re called now.)<\/p>\n<p>That was what you should NOT do.<br \/>\nSo what about what you SHOULD do?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Write down a bunch of words that mean something to your domain\/product<\/li>\n<li>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/panabee.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">panabee.com<\/a> and use that to generate a bunch of candidate names (for which the .com domain name is available)<\/li>\n<li>Get 5 of your friends\/potential customers to suggest feedback on the candidate names.<\/li>\n<li>Pick the one you like most after having heard the feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Please do NOT do step 3 before step 2.
