Yesterday, I had a late-night, deep discussion with a friend of what is happiness, and she shared this poem that she had written over 10 years ago:<\/p>\n
If I close
\nmy eyes
\ni can see<\/p>\n
As a child
\nprancing
\nto school<\/p>\n
Dangling
\nonto
\nPappa\u2019s hand<\/p>\n
The swaying palms
\nthe washed out blue
\nOf an empty sky<\/p>\n
I remember the joy
\nof rain bubbles
\ngoing `plink\u2019<\/p>\n
Delighting for hours
\nin rainbows
\nin the oil slick<\/p>\n
But that was
\naeons ago
\nAnd today, i\u2019m wiser<\/p>\n
I think I know
\nthese little joys
\nare impermanent<\/p>\n
I seek important
\n`big\u2019 reasons
\nto be happy<\/p>\n
Reasons
\nless ephemeral
\nthan rain bubbles<\/p>\n
Reasons
\nless elusive than
\nthe smell of new earth<\/p>\n
I continue in
\nmy quest for
\na permanent rainbow<\/p>\n
My very own
\nthat nothing, no one
\ncan take away from me<\/p>\n
But then why …<\/p>\n
Do little nothings
\nof long ago
\nstill gladden my heart<\/p>\n
While I have
\nno memories
\nof yesterday or day before ?<\/p>\n
In my search
\nfor `meaningful\u2019 joy
\nam I forgetting<\/p>\n
To conceive today
\nthe smiles
\nfor tomorrow ?<\/p>\n
Does happiness
\nknow
\nthe difference<\/p>\n
Between
\nrainbows in oilslick
\nand rainbows in the sky ?<\/p>\n
