I have to say that my whole direction in my academic life came from reading this captivating series when I was 11 thru 14. I read 1 thru 42 at least 4 times each. I became most interested in reading and writing from the series. My mom was a school teacher and marveled at how I went from just not caring about reading to loving it. I eventually majored in journalism at Indiana University and later began writing novels and short stories. Whomever wrote the series, and I am sad to hear that Ms McFarlane never got her due, I am most grateful to. Frank, Joe, Chet, Iola, Callie Shaw, Aunt Gertrude, Biff Hooper, Fenton Hardy, Tony....they were unforgetable. Thanks Leslie. Charles Merkel, Bristol, IN. 9/16/10

That's right, Anantha. Wikipedia has some details about the various authors who wrote Nancy Drew books. Salon has an interview with Mildred Wirt Benson the author who wrote many of the early books. I don't like it as much as the Washington Post article on Leslie McFarlane. In my opinion, it's a rather shallow interview that doesn't really dig too deep. Also, the author actually seems to like her work.

In any case, I did not read too many Nancy Drew books - They were my sister's books :-).

(Now I am sure someone is going to flame me for gender bias.)

The same holds good for the "Carolyn Keene" psuedonym, whose Nancy Drew books were commissioned by the same Stratemeyer Syndicate that was behind Hardy Boys as well.
